My oldest son, 7, loves music. We have tried to expose the boys to all types of music. But more recently, his tastes have been leaning towards heavy metal rock. At first, it was a group called “White Face” from Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, which I didn’ t like but he jumped around the house listening to it.
So I exposed him to some music from Wayne’s World. He loved it. And then for fun, we stopped by a thrift store and I said you can get one CD. He picked one the soundtrack to “Detroit Rockers.” It included David Bowie, Black Sabbath, Kiss, Thin Lizzy and more. It didn’t take long for him to start playing it over and over.
As I was reading the paper, I’d hear, “I am Iron Man.” And then my younger son, 4 would be playing his air guitar too. Soon they were both pretending to be running as the song shouted, “We’re going to make a jail break.” Before you know it, I was getting ready to jump in with, “Rebel, Rebel, your face is a mess..” We’ve been having a fun time with at our house.
But what I can’t figure out is how is it a song that would have been thought of as an intense teenage jam, like “Cat Scratch Fever, was now so readily being danced to by a 4 and 7 yr. old? I guess its just a matter of time before I’ll hear Ready Teddy..Ferocious Theodocious singing songs from his Double Live Gonzo Tour in the nursery.
Rock on little one!
